Let’s start by learning a bit more or a lot more about combi boilers.

What is a combi boiler, first?

A combi boiler, also known as a combination boiler, is a boiler that heats water and hot water from one wall-hung unit.

This is in contrast with other boiler types, such as system or regular (heat only) boilers, which require separate hot water storage tank. They take up more space and are therefore more difficult to install.

They’re simply amazing and you should get one.

Combi boilers have many advantages

The most preferred choice for residential heating and hot water in Britain is the modern combi boiler.

Compact Design

They receive water from the mains water supply directly, so there is no need to store large tanks or cylinders.

They are great for small properties, or those with limited space.

Instantaneous Hot water

Combi boilers can provide hot water almost immediately because they are fed water from the mains. The water is heated as it is used. Boilers that heat cold water in a tank may require you to wait until the tank is reheated. This can be extremely frustrating.

Installations are quicker

Because they have a lot of internal parts, they are also one of the easiest types of boilers to fit. Our engineers can install the boiler in as little as 24 hours.

Clean & Safe

Combi boilers draw their cold water from the mains water supply. There is no need to store it in a tank, which reduces the risk of a water leak.

How do combi boilers work?

The combi boiler receives cold water directly from the mains water supply. The gas fuel is burned to create heat. This heat is then transferred from the combustion chamber into the water via a heat exchanger.

Your thermostat or smart thermostat will sense a drop in temperature and send an alert to your combi boiler so it can turn on the heat.

Once you have reached the desired temperature, the boiler will decrease its heat output and keep the status quo. This will help to reduce energy waste while still keeping your home warm.

The diverter valve will turn on hot water when someone uses the hot tap, shower or bath in their home. The central heating position will be restored once the tap has been turned off.

You can direct hot water to either the central heating or water outlets. But, not both.

Who is a combi-boiler not for?

You may already have a combi boiler in your home. If so, a replacement combi might be the right thing for you.

A combi boiler might not be the best type of boiler for you home in certain circumstances.

If you own a large property that has multiple bathrooms or high hot water demands, this may be an example.

There are also rarer reasons. For example, if your area has low mains water pressure.

What is the cost of a new combi boiler?

There are many factors that affect the cost of installing a new combi boiler:

  • Type of boiler installed, e.g. a combi vs system vs regular
  • Brand and model of boiler, e.g. Budget vs. premium
  • Converting from one type of boiler to another, e.g. From a system to a combination
  • You can move your boiler’s location.
  • Any extras e.g. radiators, smart controls etc

Our new boiler cost bible is a massive, excruciatingly long guide.

Considerations for installing a combi boiler

It’s not the most expensive thing you can do, but a new combi boiler will be a part of your home for at least the next decade. Before making a decision, consider the following key factors. Here are some of these:

Which size combi boiler are you looking for? (kW output)

The power of a boiler is measured in kilowatts (kW) and reported to you. In other words, the more kW the boiler can supply hot water and heat for your home.

Boiler manufacturers often offer a variety of sizes. In just seconds, our boiler tool will help you determine the size boiler that you require.

The size of the boiler you need will depend on how many radiators you have in your home. So if you have small properties, such as a flat or a bungalow, a smaller boiler will work.

If you have a lot of rooms and radiators in your home, you will need a boiler to provide hot water for all the rooms.

You want your combi boiler to be located in the following location:

Are you happy to have your new combi boiler in the exact same place as your existing one? Would you prefer to have it moved to a different location? Maybe in an attic?

You can have your boiler moved, but it is possible, but be prepared to pay more and take longer to install.

The relocation of a boiler usually involves installing new pipework and a new flue. It can also cause more mess. All of this can lead to higher labor costs and more materials which could increase the cost of your combi boiler installation.

Efficiency of a combi boiler

Modern combi boilers are made with condensing technology. This makes them extremely efficient and helps you reduce your carbon footprint while saving money on your energy costs.

All combi boilers available through Heatable have been certified A-rated. This means they are at least 90% efficient. To further reduce energy waste, you can purchase your boiler with the most recent Google Nest Smart thermostat.

What is the exact amount? According to the Energy Saving Trust:

You could save around PS340 and 1,500kg each year by replacing your boiler with an A-rated boiler.

What is the average time it takes to install a combi boiler?

This is an important question because it may be necessary to take some time off from work.

It all depends on what type of installation you are doing. Some installations will take longer and be more complicated than others.

Installation TypeTime

Boiler swap 1 Day

Boiler swapping with relocation Within 1-2 Days

Conversion from regular/to combi 2 days

Conversion of BBU to combi 2 days
